A private charter means the boat is yours for the trip rather than shared with other guests. In Hawaii, where shared snorkel trips can carry a hundred people, that difference is larger than it sounds.
What private actually buys
The itinerary. You go where conditions and your interests suggest, rather than to the site that suits a schedule. On a day when the usual spot is choppy, a private skipper simply goes somewhere else.
The timing. Leaving at first light, when the water is calmest and the sites are empty, is the single biggest quality difference and is rarely available on a shared trip.
Space. Somewhere to sit, gear that fits, and no queue to get in the water.
Suitability for a mixed group. With children, nervous swimmers or anyone with mobility needs, a private boat is often the difference between a good day and an ordeal.
What it costs
Charters are usually priced by the boat and by duration — a half day of roughly four hours, or a full day of six to eight. Because it is per boat rather than per head, the economics improve sharply with group size; for six or eight people the per-person cost often lands close to a shared trip.
Ask what is included: snorkel gear, food, drinks, fuel surcharges. Fuel in particular is sometimes extra and is not trivial.
What to confirm before paying
The licence and the insurance. Commercial operators are licensed. Ask.
Capacity, and how many they actually take. A boat rated for twelve is unpleasant with twelve.
The weather policy. Trips are cancelled for conditions regularly. You want a refund or a genuine reschedule, in writing.
Whether there is a head on board. For a full day with a group, this matters more than anything else on the list.
Departure harbour. Some are a long drive from the resort areas, which changes what time you have to get up.
Choosing the day
Morning, always. Trade winds build through the day, so afternoon water is choppier and visibility poorer.
And be flexible about the date if you can. A skipper who suggests moving your trip by a day because conditions will be better is doing you a favour, not being awkward.
