Voyageurs National Park
A water-based park on the Minnesota-Ontario border, where the main roads are lakes.
Voyageurs is a park you travel through by boat. Four large lakes and a maze of smaller waterways make up most of it, and many of the campsites and much of the interior cannot be reached any other way.
It takes its name from the French-Canadian fur traders who used these waterways as a highway, and paddling it remains the way to see it properly.
In winter the lakes freeze hard enough for ice roads and snowmobile trails, which makes it one of the few parks that is arguably more accessible in the cold months. It is also a designated dark sky park, and the northern lights are visible here with some regularity.
