Shenandoah National Park
A long, narrow park along the Blue Ridge, defined by Skyline Drive and its waterfalls.
Shenandoah runs for roughly a hundred miles along the crest of the Blue Ridge in Virginia, and Skyline Drive runs the length of it with more than seventy overlooks.
It is one of the most accessible national parks in the east, close enough to major cities for a weekend, which makes it busy at peak times. Autumn colour is the headline draw and the roads are correspondingly crowded through October.
The waterfalls are the other reason to come, and they are best in spring when the water is high. Many of the falls trails descend steeply from the ridge, so the walk back is the harder half. A long stretch of the Appalachian Trail runs through the park.
