Kenai Fjords National Park

An Alaskan coastline of tidewater glaciers and fjords, with most of the park reachable only by boat.

Kenai Fjords is dominated by the Harding Icefield, from which some forty glaciers flow — several reaching the sea, where they calve directly into the fjords.

Exit Glacier is the only part reachable by road, and the trail up to the icefield overlook is the classic hike. Everything else is seen from the water, and a day boat trip is how most visitors experience the park: tidewater glaciers, seabird colonies, sea otters, seals, and frequently whales.

The season is short, roughly late May to early September. Weather is changeable and boat trips are cancelled with some regularity, so build slack into the itinerary and expect to be cold on the water even in July.
