Isle Royale is among the least visited national parks in the country, for a straightforward reason: you cannot drive there. Access is by ferry or seaplane, the crossing takes hours, and the park closes entirely from November to mid-April.
That inaccessibility is the appeal. It is a backpacking and paddling destination, with a long trail network and no roads on the island.
It is also the site of the longest-running predator-prey study anywhere — wolves and moose on the island have been observed continuously since 1958. Plan carefully: there are no shops, ferries do not run daily, and weather on Lake Superior can strand you for a day.
