What is accessible changes constantly. Eruptions open some areas and close others, sometimes for years, and roads and trails have been destroyed and rebuilt more than once. Check the park’s current conditions before you go — it is the only reliable source.
Beyond the craters there are lava tubes, rainforest, and a road descending to the coast. Volcanic gas is a genuine hazard, and closures on that basis should be taken seriously.
