Guadalupe Mountains National Park
A fossil reef rising from the Chihuahuan Desert, containing the highest point in Texas.
The Guadalupe Mountains are the exposed remains of a Permian reef, laid down when this was a shallow sea more than 250 million years ago. It is among the best preserved fossil reefs anywhere.
Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas, is the signature hike — a demanding climb of around eight and a half miles with substantial ascent and very little shade.
McKittrick Canyon draws a different crowd in late October and early November, when the maples turn and produce autumn colour that seems improbable in a desert. The park is quiet, facilities are minimal, and the wind here is persistent and strong enough to close trails.
