Death Valley holds the record for the highest air temperature reliably measured anywhere on Earth, and it contains the lowest point in North America at Badwater Basin, 282 feet below sea level. It is also the largest national park outside Alaska.
The scale is what surprises people. Distances between the well-known viewpoints are long, and there is very little in between, so a day here involves a lot of driving.
The season runs backwards from most parks: winter and early spring are the time to visit, and summer is genuinely dangerous. Carry far more water than seems reasonable, tell someone your route, and do not rely on mobile signal.
